Mississippi Burning

Yesterday and today in American History class I watched a movie called Mississippi Burning. I chose to write about this particular movie because the hatred in the movie really angered me and made me realize what society was like not too long ago. This movie is based on a true story about the murder or three civil rights workers in the state of Mississippi. FBI agents, played by Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe, are sent to investigate the murders. They soon realize this task won’t be so easy when they find out that many of the local police are members of the KKK and don’t want to help them find the missing people, since many were involved in the murders. Since no judge in Mississippi would charge the police or any white man for the murder of black men, the FBI had to figure out a way to charge them with something and not let them just get off the hook. Eventually the people involved in the murder were charged in a federal court for civil rights violations. I think people should see this movie because it shows of the hatred that was happening only a few years ago.

  1. Recently in American History class we have been learning about all the hatred that took place in the world. Seeing a movie like this one makes me think how society can be manipulated to break laws and think it is okay. No matter what laws are set there will still be people that get around them. It weird how all of the Civil Rights movements that we learn about history took place not too long ago.
